Principal Quest Designer – World of Warcraft

Job Description

Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented and experienced Principal Quest Designer for the World of Warcraft team. Principal Designers are multi-talented and experienced game designers with the ability to adapt to various forms of content or systems design. They can take responsibility for realizing our design philosophies in the form of epic, engaging content.As a Principal Quest Designer, you will build and implement creative quest content and mentor members of a large and exciting design team on World of Warcraft. You will collaborate with a team of designers, engineers, artists, producers, and QA to carry quest design from initial pitch into final implementation, and be a champion of Blizzard's core values. We value diverse voices and varied backgrounds, and we're looking for individuals to help us build fun, compelling, and inclusive gameplay and experiences for World of Warcraft.You will have proven experience in game design, an innate aptitude for critical thinking and analysis, outstanding communication skills, boundless creativity, and a longstanding passion for playing games.This role is anticipated to be a hybrid work position, with some work on-site and some work-from-home. The potential home studio for this role is Irvine, CA or Boston, MA.Responsibilities

Priorities can often change in a fast-paced environment like ours, so this role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Help express the story of WoW via excellent exploration, gameplay, and activities.
  • Partner with your lead, peers, QA, and producers to plan, implement, document, and test content.
  • Mentor team members through creating and iterating designs, and on implementation best practices.
  • Scope out and push for process improvements that will support the Quest Design pipeline.
  • Collaborate with WoW’s other discipline teams to create a cohesive game experience.
  • Promote, contribute to, and participate in our culture of inclusion and diversity.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Portfolio demonstrating equivalent experience OR a minimum of 7 years of quest content or outdoor world repeatable content experience. You’ve been responsible for designing significant chunks of game content from concept to completion.
  • Passion for mentoring others through understanding their needs, advocating on their behalf, and providing support and guidance as required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills when working with a wide variety of individuals and perspectives.
  • The ability to provide and receive feedback gracefully from multiple view points and provide guidance to teammates to make the best overall decision.
  • Passion for playing and making computer games.
  • Familiarity with World of Warcraft questing and outdoor content.

Pluses

  • Experience as a developer of multiplayer content in an MMO or RPG environment.
  • Experience leading or managing others.
  • Lore experience with World of Warcraft characters and story.
  • Experience creating worlds, maps and stories in roleplaying games, either live action or pen and paper campaigns.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as Lua or Python or experience writing add-ons for WoW.

These values reflect the expected base pay range of new hires across all U.S. locations. Ultimately, your specific range and offer will be based on several factors, including relevant experience, performance, and work location. Your Talent Professional can share this role’s range details for your local geography during the hiring process. In addition to a competitive base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for incentive compensation. Incentive compensation is not guaranteed.
